Meet Brad Nankervis...

Brad sat down with Grassroots Racer Podcast in 2023 to have a chat about his life, influences and all things Motorsport.

4:00am - Pit Lane - Le Mans 24hr

From hotting up glow plug engines in his youth, to building 400km per hour bespoke 600 cubic-inch Big Blocks in the present day, Brad Nankervis learnt his trade at the knee of his elders, his grandfather, his great uncle and his father.


This wealth of experience and dedication lead him to a once in a lifetime opportunity; at the ripe old age of 21, the V8 Supercars.


"Racing Legend" Larry Perkin offered him this first big break in the Engine Shop of Perkins Engineering, building the kilowatts for names such as, Steven Richard & Paul Dumbrell.


His next move was across to Ford Performance Racing (now Tickford Racing) where he expanded his craft, particularly into the area of engine management systems, such as Motec engine data management, via their in-house engine dyno. 


Brad's builds', combined with a fantastic race team, polled at multiple years of Bathurst 1000, wins at Sandown 500, Clipsall 500 and Phillip Island, under drivers Mark Winterbottom, Steven Richard, Paul Dumbrell, Jason Bright and a whole host of up and comers in the development series. 


His highlight during the FPR years was joining the Prodive Aston Martin Race Team in the UK for the pre-race prep, and subsequently travelling across to Le Mans, France to join LMP1 Lola-Aston Martin #007 car's pit crew during the 24hr Le Mans race.

He was granted a Certificate in Motorsport, by Kangan Tafe, through their recognition of his prior learning within the V8 Supercars.


Missing the variety of work, and his hometown, Brad returned to Bendigo in his early 30's, to rejoin his family business, Nankervis Performance Boats.


With their wealth of background in Marine Racing, Brad turned his attention to the vast variety of categories within Ski Racing Australia. Building not only bespoke engines, but also bespoke exhaust systems, electrical systems and data systems to suit the plethora of entries across the categories.


The car projects were ongoing also, with Brad Nankervis built engines under the bonnets of Eric Bana's "The Beast", Rod Hatfield/Lionel West's" Salt Lake Land Speed Record holder "Bronze Aussie", and the Street Machine's "Mill of the Month" engine in Howard Bell's Torana SLR/8000. Additionally, rally champ Brendan Reeve's “Datzilla”, numerous Summer Nats and Speedway entries and too many project cars to name them all.


With the retirement of his father and the winding up of his family business, Brad is now continuing in his own engine shop, Nankervis Performance Racing Engines, ready for all projects, great and small. With in-house machine work, advanced engine management and an engine dyno coming soon, Brad is ready for the next exciting adventure.

Bronze Aussie clocked in at 469km per hour at DLRA's Speed Week in 2025. Watch its original record-breaking engine on the dyno in 2018. This little beauty clocked the World Record for the Fasted 4 Door Car with 437 km per hour.
